Oregon grand bargain K-12 money unlikely to hit this school year!

In selling the need for a legislative special session to boost education funding, Gov. John Kitzhaber said if lawmakers acted quickly, they could funnel money into classrooms this school year. But a late amendment to the school funding bill that passed during this week’s three-day session dumped all $100 million into next school year. That means districts short on reserve funds probably won’t add school days or hire teachers until next school year. But the House Democrats who tacked on the amendment have an angle: They hope that by pushing the money into next school year, K-12 funding will have a higher established standard when lawmakers convene in 2015 to set the next state budget. Rep. Peter Buckley, D-Ashland, said the goal was to make sure school districts invested the money in adding back days and teachers instead of one-time expenditures.
