CAVE JUNCTION--As a $2 million mass spectrometer quietly analyzes urine samples in the lab next to his office, Art Robinson holds forth in a professorial tone honed from his years as a research chemist. The new chairman of the Oregon Republican Party expounds at length about the complex device, insisting he's really just a scientist who was reluctantly dragged into politics. In 1988, Laurelee died suddenly of a rare form of acute pancreatitis at age 43. He was left with six children, aged 17 months to 12 years. Robinson continued their home-schooling in a converted shed, adopting what he described as a system of self-learning, albeit with some stern limits. Among them: no sugar and no TV.
