Cover Oregon consultant bills state about $600,000

The Oregonian reports Clyde Hamstreet has completed his job stabilizing Oregon's health care exchange. But the cost of his work and two associates has added up nearly $600,000 and he hasn't submitted his August invoice. Hamstreet was initially signed to a $100,000 contract in April but the scope of his contract grew and the dollar amount was amended as well. Gov. John Kitzhaber asked Hamstreet to take over the exchange in April when he forced out three top officials. He was hired for a four-to-six-week job that extended into five months because the reorganization turned out to be a bigger job than expected.

Oregon Sex Offenders

Twice-convicted child molester Daniel Zetterholm registered in San Diego, then hopped a bus and turned up in Portland with 4,500 images of child pornography and a guide for sex offenders on how to avoid detection.Predator Jeffrey Cutlip left Oregon three times — once for three years — with police none the wiser. Only when he returned to collect Social Security and later turned himself in did they learn he'd traveled to New Mexico, California and Texas.
They lived or landed in Oregon, a state with one of the worst records in the country at following federal standards intended to thwart roaming sex offenders. It has become a haven for offenders who want to escape much stricter rules in other states.

Feds cite 'fundamental concerns' with Oregon's coordinated care model

The Oregonian reports this morning that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services cited "fundamental concerns" with parts of Oregon's coordinated care organization model.
The "directive could eventually even force the state to return hundreds of millions of dollars received from the federal government," the paper's Nick Budnick wrote.

Surveys already indicate that an increasing percentage of teens don't see marijuana as particularly dangerous, despite a growing number of studies raising concerns that the drug can have a harmful effect on brain development among youths. Researchers say their concerns have become heightened as more potent strains of marijuana became commonplace.

Please don't give up on this wonderful country. Resist the urge to equate its failed leadership with its incredible people. We've come back from far worse. This country is bigger than its failed leaders. We will fix this, with or without the DC bow-tie crowd.I'm upset too, there are days I question how we let this failed government lead us down this path. But that feeling of frustration doesn't absolve us of a responsibility to change the future for the better. Simply because some government bureaucrat isn't knocking on your door, doesn't mean one isn't preparing to drive to your house. Action matters. Do something. Do what you can to change the outcome of tomorrow and I promise you will feel just a bit better about today. I promise to do my best to Represent You my Neighbor.

How Long Has Oregon's Unemployemant Rate Been Above Nations??

"It's been 17 years that we've had unemployment higher than the national average in Oregon." Richardson, in the debate, didn’t specifically blame Kitzhaber in making his claim, though Richardson’s staff later confirmed that was the implication. Kitzhaber is in his third term as governor, serving from 1995 to 2003 and since 2011. He’s now running for an unprecedented fourth term.

UO taps arts and sciences leader to replace 'world's worst schmoozer'

UO’s board named Scott Coltrane to the role after accepting the sudden resignation of Michael Gottfredson Thursday. Coltrane is known for his studies of fathers and families."He investigates why and how men are involved (or uninvolved) in housework and child care and how this influences their partners, their children and their families,” according to his UO staff biography. In the meantime, questions are arising over both Gottfredson’s hiring and departure. The Salem Statesman-Journal reported that he’ll receive $940,000 in severance pay. As the paper pointed out, fundraising fell during Gottfredson’s second year. He also lost supporters within the faculty ranks, said one professor. "He was just tortured by the most basic part of his job where he had to communicate with people," economics professor Bill Harbaugh told the Statesman-Journal."The main job of a university president these days is to raise money ... Gottfredson was the world's worst schmoozer."

Where does Jeff Merkley get his campaign cash?

Since he entered the Senate in 2009, he's raised nearly $9.2 million for his re-election campaign, according to Open Secrets, the website run by the Committee for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan watchdog group. As of June 30, he had $3.5 million in the bank. 1) Ideological/single-issue groups: $690,697. This category includes those supporting gay and abortion rights. 2) Finance, insurance and real estate: $583,247. 3) Lawyers and lobbyists: $528,826. Merkley picks up a lot of money from trial lawyers, who oppose efforts to limit their ability to file lawsuits. Which raises all of our premiums. 4) Organized labor: $337,300. About 20 percent of Merkley's money from political action committees has come from unions, according to Open Secrets. Merkley is also a favorite of the progressive, socialists, activist left, and he raises a lot of money from small contributors. Many of them contribute through ActBlue, an online fundraising
tool for Democrats.

Recent job losses cut into Oregon's economic growth UO report

A number of industries cut jobs in June, and the state lost a combined 4,300 jobs. Those losses, on top of slowing activity at the Port of Portland and the declining volume of homebuilding permits, weighed on the UO's measure of growth.

Michael Gottfredson will get $940K severance as U of O President

And people wonder why their child's tuition is so high? Nearly a $1M in compensation to "mutually part ways"? $360K a year as a tenured instructor? Higher education continues to be out of reach for many families. Folks have asked me what the point was of posting the Portland Public Schools Superintendents 28% Salary Increase for a total compensation of over $300,000 per year. Not to mention Carole Smith's Golden Parachute. I would say the same reason I am reposting this article. These school administrators are not being rewarded from the profits of a company they built. They are being rewarded with Our Tax Dollars that should be going to the children, their classrooms, and teachers. Think of these administrators next time your asked to pass another school bond for repair or for "the children".

Oregon's gas prices are fourth most expensive Oregon fuel gauge!!

AAA Oregon/Idaho says the national average for regular unleaded drops below $3.50 per gallon this week for the first time since March 12, and is at its lowest level for early August since 2010. The Oregon average is at its lowest price since mid-June. Drivers in the Pacific states continue to pay the highest prices in the country per gallon for regular unleaded. The top five most expensive states are Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington.

Driver cards’ business-union alliance harms law-abiding employers, low-skilled Oregonians

To see how industry lobbyists and Big Labor can collaborate to harm both law-abiding employers and low-skilled Americans, look no further than the new political action committee formed to push for illegal-immigrant driver cards.
Two trade-association executives head the PAC: Bill Perry of the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association and Jeff Stone of the Oregon Association of Nurseries. Among the PAC’s first donors: the political arm of the Service Employees International Union, which has contributed $20,000. The PAC will work to garner"yes” votes for the November ballot measure via which Oregon voters will approve or reject driving privileges for illegal immigrants. In April and May 2013, the Legislature passed and Gov. John Kitzhaber signed the law granting driver cards to illegal immigrants. It was"rammed through the Legislature so quickly,” wrote Rep. Sal Esquivel, R-Medford,"that most Oregonians barely got the chance to scrutinize it and weigh in with their opinions.” But over the next five months, the law’s opponents, led by the citizen activists of Oregonians for Immigration Reform, collected the signatures of more than 71,000 Oregon voters and successfully referred the law to the November 2014 statewide ballot.

Driver cards will aid drug smugglers

Continuing the trend, much of the illicit drugs killing Oregonians are produced, manufactured and smuggled into the state by drug cartels operating out of Mexico. On April 24, the Oregon Medical Examiner (OME) reported 222 drug related deaths in 2013 were caused by the illicit drugs....Putting these numbers into perspective, Multnomah County residents are just over 19 percent of Oregon's population of 3.9 million, yet the county experienced nearly 46 percent of the state's illicit drug deaths...When it came to illicit drug related deaths in the state last year, according to the OME, Multnomah County had the dubious distinction of leading all 36 Oregon counties ...The cartels' drug mules and dealers operating motor vehicles bringing drugs into the state or distributing drugs across the state need some form of identification like an Oregon driver's license or driver card to move around the state....Senate Bill 833, driver card legislation passed during the 2013 legislative session, could literally give the cartel members operating motor vehicles in this state a get-out-of-jail-free card ...

Portland School Board approves 28 percent raise for Superintendent Carole Smith

Portland School Board members voted 5-2 to grant Superintendent Carole Smith a 28 percent raise and a three-year contract extension, bumping her pay up to $247,000 and making her the highest-paid schools chief in Oregon. In addition to the raise, the board has also increased Smith's tax-sheltered monthly payments from $1,500 to $2,500. Teachers union vice-president Suzanne Cohen said the board should put more money back in the classroom, instead of giving Smith such an increase.

Oregon’s Health CO-OP would be dropping rates by 21% if OHP would Allow!!

One Oregon health plan will drop its rates for individuals by nearly 10 percent next year, a sizable amount. But if the chief executive had his way, Oregon’s Health CO-OP would be dropping rates twice that much. The CO-OP wanted to slash its individual rates by an average of 21 percent. But the Oregon Insurance Commission scaled back that request to 9.9 percent."This is really, really a surprise,” said President and CEO Ralph Prows."We’ve always been about finding every way we could to make health care more affordable.”
