I'll continue to support a full repeal of ObamaCare Greg Walden

We didn't think ObamaCare could actually get worse but in the past week we received two additional causes for great concern. We are now learning huge databases containing your personal health records will be connected, possibly creating a massive invasion of your privacy. Then earlier this week a report was released showing that the federal government will spend nearly $700 Million on marketing ObamaCare.

That's right... you are spending money to convince yourself of the benefits of a program you already know is horrible.

You can change your opinion but you cannot change history.

Multnomah County’s Wapato Jail is 100 percent vacant. Costing Oregon taxpayers $400,000 annually.

Similarly, Multnomah County’s Wapato Jail has operated 100 percent vacant for almost 10 years, costing Oregon taxpayers between $300,000 and $400,000 annually. Over the past decade, Oregon’s prison population has grown by more than 3,000 inmates, bringing the total number of inmates to over 14,000, spanning 14 prisons―including the $120 million Dear Ridge Correctional Institute which, despite 60 percent vacancy, still operates. On the bright side, union members still have their jobs.

Wapato Jail what to do with a mothballed facility that costs taxpayers $400,000 a year to maintain.

With the 10th anniversary of Wapato’s completion fast approaching, current county officials, like those who preceded them, are left wondering what to do with a mothballed facility that costs taxpayers between $300,000 and $400,000 a year to maintain. That means the county has spent about $3.5 million since Wapato was completed to keep it safely in mothballs. It’s been so long since the project was launched, in fact, that all of the bonds sold to finance the jail will be paid off by 2016 – possibly before it has ever housed a single inmate."The core issue is that a prior county board, in an ill-advised move, decided to build this facility when it wasn’t clear that it was needed or that we could afford to operate it,” board Chairman Jeff Cogen said."Unfortunately, both turned out to be true.”

Oregon Dems protect public employee sexual abusers!

A 2006 editorial in the Oregonian commented on how Oregon children who are sexually abused by public employees don’t have the same protection under the law as children who are sexually abused by anyone else – including by Boy Scout leaders or priests.
House Republicans attempted to right that injustice this legislative session with HB 3541. But in a vote this week that fell along party lines, Oregon House Democrats decided that they cared more about the money and support they get from public employee unions than they care about the victims of sexual abuse. One House member, Freshman Rep. Shania Fagan, ducked the tough vote altogether.

Who is to blame for such high prison costs?

Did you know that compared to similar-sized states, Oregon has one of the fastest growing prison populations in the nation and spends 7.5 percent more per inmate than the national average—$84.81 each day?

Are 'pet projects' to blame for Portland's high water and sewer rates?

There’s little doubt that Portland has one of the highest combined water and sewer rates in the country. The city came in at No. 5 in a 2010 industry analysis of the nation’s 50 most populous cities, and rates have more than doubled since 2001. Naturally, this leads to some frustration from ratepayers. A couple years back, a group of Portlanders filed a lawsuit asking a Multnomah County judge to declare that the city improperly spent millions of dollars in ratepayer money on projects such as the Rose Festival Foundation headquarters and the Water House in east Portland.

Nine sputtering cities may follow rusted, busted Detroit (One of them is Portland).

One has to wonder if Portland might deliberately drive itself into bankruptcy as part of a larger plan to become the hipster capital of the world. Regardless, the largest city in Oregon is well on its way to financial trouble. Moody’s is reviewing the city’s credit rating for its general obligation bonds, but also for Portland’s tax obligation bonds, housing bonds and redevelopment bonds. The city has more than $453 million in unfunded pension debt.

Gov. Kitzhaber promises to keep better tabs on staff...

Oregon's inaugural chief education officer, Rudy Crew, was required by the terms of his contract with Kitzhaber to secure advance permission to do outside work or consulting while also performing his $280,000-a-year job for Oregon. But, despite traveling frequently to give speeches and other presentations unrelated to his Oregon work, Crew never sought such approval -- and neither the governor nor anyone else on the board asked him about it until May.

Queenie Wong at the Salem Statesman Journal put together a great list yesterday of the top lobbying spenders during this year’s Oregon legislative session. With the government’s own lobbyists and public employee union lobbyists dominating the top 10 spenders, no wonder government keeps growing!

Oregon Rep. Dennis Richardson announces campaign for Governor

Richardson has also been a staunch critic of government spending.
His key focuses will be working to reduce the unemployment rate that has been stagnant since the recession; increasing educational outcomes for Oregon’s students; and creating solutions to the growing needs of Oregon’s senior citizens and the veteran community, according to his press release.
