Understanding Oregon's Hidden Sales Tax on Energy !!

Since 2002 most Oregon electricity customers have been forced to pay a monthly energy tax of at least 3% to support such groups as the Energy Trust of Oregon and the Oregon Housing and Community Services agency. Over the last decade more than one billion has been collected to improve energy efficiency and subsidize renewable power. This presentation will discuss where the money goes and outline ways to reduce or repeal the tax.

House looks to redo summary for drivers card measure!!

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Supporters of a referendum granting driving privileges to people who can't prove they're legally in the United States are trying to rewrite the official summary that will appear on the ballots in November.
The Legislature's language would make no reference to the change in requirements for drivers' immigration status, saying only that the measure "establishes limited purpose, duration driver card for individuals who prove Oregon residency, meet driving requirements."
In a rare move, Legislature's action would throw out the certified ballot title written by the attorney general's office, which says the measure "provides Oregon resident 'driver card' without requiring proof of legal presence in the United States." The House Rules Committee approved the measure Tuesday, setting up a vote Wednesday in the full House. Critics are crying foul.

'More addictive than heroin' Oregon politics, the week in quotes!!

Here are our quotes of the week in Oregon politics: "You have to be on the floor, not in the bathroom” to vote. Unlike Rep. Tomei HD 41:- House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, scolding a House member (Tomei) Feb. 14 for lax attendance."I was all-county my senior year.” -- Kotek on Tuesday on her Pop-a-Shot basketball skills."This is one of the ‘first-and-only’ lists I’d like to get off of.” -- Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, testifying Thursday on House Bill 4143. The bill would take unclaimed money from class-action lawsuits and give it to Legal Aid. Oregon is one of only two states that now sends the money back to the offending company.

Mission of the Oregon Citizens Lobby!!

Our mission is to help empower Oregonians by monitoring the legislative process in this state. We analyze bills and track them throughout their life cycle. We also track the actions of state representatives and senators as they work through and vote on these bills. The bills and legislators receive a grade based upon the 5 core principles of OCL. If a politician votes in a manner that violates one or more of these principles it is up to them to explain why they did so. We leave the politics to the politicians. The result of our work is posted at Track Their Vote for the public to review.
Our hope is that this information will help citizens better understand proposed legislation which will in turn allow them to give relevant testimony on bills, lobby their legislators, and hold these politicians accountable for their actions. Five Core Principles:
Fiscal Responsibility
Government should have a limited budget that reflects the vitality of the state’s economy.
Local Control
Governmental power and functions should be as close to the citizens as possible for maximum oversight, control, and responsiveness.
Free Markets
Production and prices should be dictated by the laws of supply and demand without the interference of government in the way of subsidies, price controls, or over-burdensome regulation.
Limited Government
Our government should be charged with administering only those functions essential to society and that cannot be performed by private entities.
Personal Choice and Responsibility
Citizens must be free to pursue life, liberty, and property without undue government interference and to reap the rewards or bear the consequences of their decisions.

Oregon Legislature focuses on land use, class-action lawsuits, OHSU money in final weeks!!

Oregon Health & Science University hopes to secure $200 million in bonds from the state to help the university match a $500 million challenge grant from Nike founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny to boost cancer research. Whether lawmakers sign off on the full amount may be up for debate next week.
"There are really strong advocates for $200 million," said Rep. Peter Buckley, D-Ashland, a co-chair of the budget committee. "I think there's some concern about using so much of it. We have $300 million in bonding capacity."
