Driver cards will aid drug smugglers

Continuing the trend, much of the illicit drugs killing Oregonians are produced, manufactured and smuggled into the state by drug cartels operating out of Mexico. On April 24, the Oregon Medical Examiner (OME) reported 222 drug related deaths in 2013 were caused by the illicit drugs....Putting these numbers into perspective, Multnomah County residents are just over 19 percent of Oregon's population of 3.9 million, yet the county experienced nearly 46 percent of the state's illicit drug deaths...When it came to illicit drug related deaths in the state last year, according to the OME, Multnomah County had the dubious distinction of leading all 36 Oregon counties ...The cartels' drug mules and dealers operating motor vehicles bringing drugs into the state or distributing drugs across the state need some form of identification like an Oregon driver's license or driver card to move around the state....Senate Bill 833, driver card legislation passed during the 2013 legislative session, could literally give the cartel members operating motor vehicles in this state a get-out-of-jail-free card ...

Oregon came in dead last.

House looks to redo summary for drivers card measure!!

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Supporters of a referendum granting driving privileges to people who can't prove they're legally in the United States are trying to rewrite the official summary that will appear on the ballots in November.
The Legislature's language would make no reference to the change in requirements for drivers' immigration status, saying only that the measure "establishes limited purpose, duration driver card for individuals who prove Oregon residency, meet driving requirements."
In a rare move, Legislature's action would throw out the certified ballot title written by the attorney general's office, which says the measure "provides Oregon resident 'driver card' without requiring proof of legal presence in the United States." The House Rules Committee approved the measure Tuesday, setting up a vote Wednesday in the full House. Critics are crying foul.

Driver card referendum Oregon Legislature could rewrite ballot title!!

SALEM -- The Oregon Legislature could rewrite the title of a contentious measure on the November ballot asking voters whether to grant driver cards to residents who can’t prove they’re in the state legally. Legislative leaders will likely decide in the next week or so whether to take that step, said Rep. Jessica Vega Pederson, D-Portland, and other sources. The issue has deeply divided supporters and opponents. The 2013 Legislature approved granting four-year driver cards. Opponents, hoping voters will overturn the law, gathered enough signatures to suspend it and put it on the ballot. To change the title, the House Rules Committee or House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, could introduce a new bill or legislators could amend an existing one. Cynthia Kendoll, president of Oregonians For Immigration Reform, which gathered signatures to send the issue to voters, accused lawmakers of overstepping.
