Portland School Board approves 28 percent raise for Superintendent Carole Smith

Portland School Board members voted 5-2 to grant Superintendent Carole Smith a 28 percent raise and a three-year contract extension, bumping her pay up to $247,000 and making her the highest-paid schools chief in Oregon. In addition to the raise, the board has also increased Smith's tax-sheltered monthly payments from $1,500 to $2,500. Teachers union vice-president Suzanne Cohen said the board should put more money back in the classroom, instead of giving Smith such an increase.

Common Core was invented by a handful of Washington-based education"experts” five years ago and bankrolled by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. But it took off when the Obama administration put $4.3 billion in state education grants called Race to the Top in the stimulus bill. President Barack Obama’s Education Secretary Arne Duncan made it clear the surest way for states to qualify was to adopt Common Core. Some states took it unseen, since the first grant applications were due in January 2010, and the standards were not written until months later. New York adopted Common Core in July 2010, in return for $697 million. All in all, 45 states signed on to a program that had never been tested in even one school. Contrary to what the public is told, Common Core is not about standards. It’s about content — what school kids are taught. In the social studies framework approved on April 29 by New York State’s education authorities (but not parents), American history is presented as four centuries of racism, economic oppression and gender discrimination. Teachers are encouraged to help students identify their differences instead of their common American identity. Gone are heroes, ideals and American exceptionalism.

Common Core was initiated in 2009 by the nation’s governors, seeking national standards for math and English literacy. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan supported the move, spending $350 million to develop Common Core tests. More than 40 states and the District of Columbia have adopted the Common Core State Standards.

Oregon teachers union calls for moratorium on Common Core reading, math tests!!

Oregon's teachers union is calling on state schools chief Rob Saxton to cancel state reading and math tests in spring 2015 because it says the new exams Oregon plans to give are unproven and too hard. Giving them, the union says, would harm students by making most of them feel like failures. Saxton said Monday that he won't consider canceling the tests, which he acknowledged will be challenging, because they are geared to what Oregon students need to know to succeed in college and on the job. Saxton said he refuses to have Oregon lag behind all other states in switching to teaching and testing students according to the Communist Common Core State Standards.

Oregon school performance ratings

The state created a five-tier rating system designed to give slightly more than half of schools one of the top two ratings.
Level 5 schools: These 114 schools performed in the top 10 percent statewide.
Level 4 schools: This is the broadest performance category, covering 557 schools that ranked from the 90th percentile down to the 44th%
Level 3 schools: These 356 schools performed below average to well below average.
Level 2 schools: These 113 schools performed in the bottom 15 percent statewide. The federal government considers these schools in serious need of improvement.
Level 1 schools: These 54 schools rank in the worst 5 percent, and the feds consider them in dire need of improvement. They have low test scores, low student growth, poor achievement by low-income students or, for high schools, atrocious graduation rates.

Fast Times At Portlnd Public High Schools!!

This week's Willamette Week reports that: Portland Public Schools created an eight -period class day; "limited most students to seven class periods spread over two days" and that now fewer than half of high school students attend class for a full day. This sounds almost too crazy to be true. More importantly, it sounds to me like a fact that might finally wake up Portlanders to the truth that their Democratic leadership has destroyed the schools.
