Salem daycare suspension sparks Pot Debate

SALEM -- The state of Oregon has suspended the license of a daycare in Salem because the manager and other staff members smoke pot at the facility while children are on-site. Parents who take their kids to day care centers and schools in Portland are now asking questions. It was hard for KGW to find anyone who said smoking pot at a day care is a good idea, whether it's medicinal or not. And every expert said trust is the biggest key for parents. The state has set up a resource for parents to check every licensed and registered daycare in Oregon, through Oregon.gov. There you can check for possible violations, complaints, active licensing and employees. The state encourages parents to call 503-556-6616 with additional questions.

Sellwood controversy Marijuana dispensary"moratorium”?

On March 21, the Oregon Health Authority announced it had issued licenses to eight medical marijuana dispensaries – one of them in Sellwood. Since then, more than forty such licenses have reportedly been issued statewide. The Sellwood business is called"NW Green Oasis”, and it is sited in a former mortgage business office (“Bank of England”) at 1035 S.E. Tacoma Street, on the corner of 11th Street. The neighbors repeated their concerns over lack of notice or input in the granting of both the state license and city business license to the store; and a woman who said she and her children live immediately adjacent to the dispensary have special concerns over the livability of their home if, in the November election, the recreational use of marijuana – still an illegal drug at the federal level – is permitted in Oregon by the voters. In that event, the dispensary could turn into a public retail store, she said.

Anybody but me see anything wrong with this? A state license also affords dispensaries some protection by making infractions of state rules a civil matter rather than a crime, Bullock said. Allegations arose under the old system that some pot shops were illegally selling marijuana. The new rules make it legal for dispensaries to pay growers for their product and receive payment from their customers directly. But sales will be scrutinized. The regulations say a shop must document operating costs, to include"costs of transferring, handling, securing, insuring, testing, packaging and processing … and the cost of supplies, utilities and rent or mortgage.” But the amount the "patient" buys is not tracked.. So, a person can go from one head shop to another buying the maximum 24 ounces!!
